What are Bach flower remedies and how can they help?

Bach flower remedies are used for emotional and physical problems such as anxiety and pain. They’re made out of watered-down extracts from the flowers of wild plants.

Why are they called “Bach” flower remedies?

Dr. Edward Bach was born on September 24, 1886 in Moseley England. From 1906-1912 he studied medicine at the University College Hospital in London and trained to be a Doctor. Dr Bach worked in Harley Street, London, which is still an area well known for expensive private medical services. He also studied bacteriology, immunology, and homeopathy during his career. Bach originally worked in vaccine therapy but moved on to homeopathic remedies.

What did Dr Bach do?

Edward Bach noticed that when treating people there was a pattern between personality types and types of ill health. After working in conventional medicine he became disillusioned with allopathic medicine. Dr Bach said, “the main reason for the failure of modern medical science is that it is dealing with results and not causes.” Dr Bach came to believe that there must be ways to heal the body naturally. He gave up working in London and began creating a healing method using plants and flowers. He believed that the body’s emotional imbalances could be the real cause of physical symptoms and could be addressed using essences from plants and flowers. Dr Bach’s research was stimulated by his personal experience of cancer which was expected to kill him in 1917.

In 1934, Bach wrote about his flower remedies, “they cure, not by attacking the disease, but by flooding our bodies with the beautiful vibrations of our Higher Nature, in the presence of which, disease melts away as snow in the sunshine. There is no true healing unless there is a change in outlook, peace of mind and inner happiness.”

What are Bach flower remedies?

Dr Bach’s remedies are known as the Twelve Healers - the type remedies, that could be interpreted as defining a characteristic rather than a passing mood. Then there are Seven Helpers which he described as being for long-standing or chronic states. Later came the Second Nineteen, which are remedies for the emotional reactions we experience as a result of traumatic events. There are 38 remedies in total. Each remedy can harmonise negative emotions such as impatience, fear or anxiety.

How are they made?

Bach essences are prepared by floating flowers in a glass bowl of fresh spring water which is left in strong sunlight. The other method of preparation boils the flowers. Through these preparation methods, a pattern of information is transferred to the water and a treatment tincture is prepared by further dilution.

How are the used?

They can then be taken as drops directly into the mouth, on to the skin or in a drink.

How do they work?

Dr Bach believed that illness in the body was a message from inside asking for a deep change in our lifestyle and mindset which will bring us back to health. Bach flower remedies treat the body holistically unlike conventional medicine which treats the symptoms. The main focus of flower remedies is to help us to change and therefore harmonise our imbalances and help us to have a better experience of life, free from mental anguish and physical pain.

This can be done through Systematic Kinesiology. Through the art of muscle testing your body can tell you which remedy is right for you, for your personality type and your specific ailment. The remedy your body needs may be for deep emotional pain which is the cause of physical discomfort, which means it would be very hard to pick and choose the right remedy in a shop.
